THE A352 was blocked earlier as fire crews battled a large timber fire.

The road was blocked between Winfrith and Wool as fire teams battled eight tonnes of felled timber on fire.

The service received the call just after 12:15pm to a fire in a field near the Burton Road junction, near Wool.

Two fire crews attended the incident.

One team attended from Wareham Fire Station who then requested a further pumping appliance with off-road capability from Poole Fire Station.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets and one main line fed from a hydrant supply to extinguish the fire.

It took crews just over two hours to extinguish the blaze.

The fire is believed to have been started by an unattended bonfire.

The road remained closed for a large part of the afternoon with police managing traffic in both directions as a hose was running across the road.

Crews re-attended the area this evening to make sure there were no further hot-spots.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind people to keep bonfires attended and take basic safety precautions when having a controlled burn.
