A DRIVER had a lucky escape after his car went through a hedge and rolled over in a field near Dorchester in the early hours.

It is understood the man was not seriously injured despite the car flipping over.

It ended up on its side and rescuers righted the vehicle before helping the driver climb out.

He was checked over by paramedics but not found to be seriously injured.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash on the Old Sherborne Road south of the turning to Charlton Down in the early hours of Saturday.

Dorset Police said it was a black Mini Cooper registered to a driver from the local area.

A spokesman said the car had gone through a hedge and rolled over and the person was still in the vehicle.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said the brigade was alerted at 12.30am by police control to reports of a single vehicle road traffic collision.

The spokesman said: “Two retained crews of firefighters from Dorchester were alerted and found a single vehicle which had left the road and ended up on its side in a field.

“Police officers were also on scene when crews arrived. Firefighters manually stabilised the car, to allow the male driver to climb out of the window, before righting the vehicle back on to its wheels.

“It is not thought that the driver suffered any serious injuries.

“Fire crews left the scene at around 1am after ensuring the vehicle was safe to be left.”

The police spokesman said the driver had a ‘lucky escape’, adding the incident was left in the hands of paramedics.
