DORSET Police have issued advice and tips to keep garden sheds and garages secure against thieves.
A police spokesman said: “The value of property in sheds and garages is more than people think, and thieves target them for power tools, cycle and sports equipment.
“Hand tools are taken from sheds and used to break into homes. These thieves can be stopped by following a few simple steps.”
• A good quality closed shackle padlock on your shed is great, but not if it is used with a thin and flimsy hasp and staple.
• Secure all hasps and door hinges with coach bolts or non-return screws.
• Consider using thorny bushes next to walls and fences such as berberis, hawthorn, hedge holly and pyracantha.
• A Dorset Police ‘sheducation’ facility is on display in Castle Gardens plant nursery, Sherborne with various shed security methods and crime prevention ideas on display.
• Visibly security mark the contents of your shed, make a note of serial numbers and photograph valuable items.
