PEOPLE from Dorset enjoyed a visit to a warship affiliated to the county.

Minehunter HMS Cattistock welcomed on board families of sailors and guests from two of the ship’s affiliated organisations – the Cattistock Hunt and Lilliput Sea Scouts from Poole.

The visitors’ day in Portsmouth included a barbecue and trip around the harbour on powerboats provided by the Royal Navy Sailing Centre.

Kevin Reid from the Cattistock Hunt said: “We were honoured to be invited on board. What struck me is the pride and sense of ownership shown by every member of the ship’s company. It was a fascinating visit and we felt very much part of the ship’s extended family.”

HMS Cattistock is coming to the end of an extensive refit period in Portsmouth. She will return to sea in the autumn for trials and training in UK waters.

Lieutenant Commander Simon Cox, who recently assumed command of HMS Cattistock, said: “The day has been a huge success and events like these are vitally important. A warship is a team effort and our success is directly linked to the support given by family, friends and affiliates. When the ship goes away on deployment, this support is pivotal to enable us to protect our nation’s interests.”
