A POPULAR Weymouth pub has been voted as “paw-some” in a national competition.

The Spice Ship at Preston in Weymouth has been announced as the best pub for pooches in the national Be Dog Friendly Awards 2015, proving it is the lead pub in its field.

Managed by Wendy Buckingham, the pub is on Preston Road at the gateway to Weymouth and has proved a paradise for pets over recent years, and now has official recognition after it scooping the prestigious award.

The competition is held in association with Dog Friendly, the UK’s largest directory of dog-friendly accommodation, pubs, beaches and days out. The winners are selected based solely on public vote, with The Spice Ship receiving more votes than any other pub in the UK.

Ms Buckingham said: “Being a real dog lover, it is so important to find places that show a warm and friendly welcome to owners with their four-legged friends.

“I am over the moon with the award for The Spice Ship and wanted to thank everyone that voted for us, I am looking forward to meeting new owners and their dogs to The Spice Ship.”

Keith Perks, a regular punter at the pub, nominated it for the award and Ms Buckingham said she now hopes that the award will lead to a boom in business for the establishment.

Research from the Kennel Club, a national charity that looks after the health and welfare of dogs, shows that dog owners are more likely to visit an area or town if it has a reputation for pubs and establishments that have a dog-friendly attitude.

Caroline Kisko, secretary at the Kennel Club, praised The Spice Ship on its win and encouraged more places to have a dog-friendly attitude.

She said: “We are delighted that The Spice Ship has been recognised for the fantastic experience offered to guests.

“The winners of these awards are determined by the public and all of this year’s winners are wonderful examples of the many businesses and public places that have already adopted a dog-friendly policy and are reaping the benefits of welcoming dogs.”
