FAMOUS names and funny tales are in store when Mickey Rooney takes the stage.

Weymouth Pavilion can hope for a packed auditorium when the Hollywood legend lifts the lid on 80 years on and off screen.

The show, One Man And One Wife, will be a cabaret double act for Rooney and his wife of 29 years Jan Chamberlin Rooney.

Jan is Rooney's eighth wife - and their marriage has far outlasted those in his past.

He first tied the knot, aged 22, with Ava Gardner.

But their marriage lasted only 16 months.

He was divorced six times and widowed once before marrying Jan in 1978, and says their 29-year relationship is his 'greatest life achievement'.

The couple launched their two-person show to tell the tales of cinema's golden age.

And on August 27 the Pavilion audience can expect an anecdotal evening of stories, interspersed with songs.

Since its debut - nearly 10 years ago - it has been a hit around the world, with successful tours of the US, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Nicky Jenkins, duty manager at Weymouth Pavilion, said: "It's a show that immediately sparked our imagination and we're hoping it will be hugely popular.

"He's a big star who's appeared in lots of movies, so it's a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look.

"The night will be about bringing back memories of the couple's life in show business - in the movies and on stage.

"It should offer a glimpse of the golden days of old Hollywood and also give some insight into new Hollywood.

"We think it will appeal to audiences of all ages because he crosses the generation gap."

Rooney is an accomplished musician, playing almost every instrument in an orchestra.

Wife Jan is a singer, actress and songwriter and can be expected to perform classic songs on the night as well as music of her own.
