QUEUES lined Pennsylvania Road to make sure of an early entry to Pennsylvania Plant and Craft Fair which is now the biggest open air event of the island's year.

In all, 2,000 adults went through the gates in addition to large numbers of accompanied children. Young people from Portland Amateur Boxing Club and the Royal Manor Arts College did sterling work as car park marshalls, working in shifts until the ground was cleared.

There were 60 stalls from which to choose plants, flowers and shrubs along with quality crafts and the goods offered by charities including Julie's House, Coastwatch, Weymouth and Portland Friends of Chernobyl's Children and Portland Rotary Club.

One woman was so entranced by a beautifully crafted piece of doll's furniture that her husband bought it for her as an advance Christmas present.

There were three prizes of Satellite Navigation Systems worth £170 each in the lottery and if the holder of blue ticket number 22, code AX9V ZB4Y will phone 01305 820677, the prize is still there waiting to be claimed.

The scarecrow competition winners were: n Children, Rebecca Sherman and Shirley Butler.

The day produced £3,000 for Portland Rotary funds.
