DORSET HealthCare has received prestigious accolades for its training and education programmes at this year’s Health Education England Wessex Shine Awards.

Dorset HealthCare’s prevention and management of violence and aggression team was chosen as the ‘high performing education and training team of the year’ for the success and effectiveness of its training in reducing the number of violent incidents and physical interventions on patient wards.

The speech and language therapy dysphagia training team was also a finalist within this category for the work they carry out in teaching people with throat conditions to eat safely.

Colin Hague, director of human resources at the organisation, said: “It was a privilege to attend this year’s Wessex Shine awards and see so many exceptional members of staff receive recognition for the brilliant work they do at the Trust.

“To be able to provide high quality care for our patients we must look to our training programmes first; these awards show that we have a hugely dedicated team across services who are constantly developing and providing brilliant training for our staff.

“They are all a credit to Dorset HealthCare, they really do shine and should be thoroughly proud of their work.”

The annual regional awards recognise excellence in education and training within the NHS across Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset and South Wiltshire.

Two further Trust teams received awards for the ‘education and training innovation champion of the year’ category. This included the blended learning programme which offers staff flexible ways to access learning and development to provide consistently high quality care, and the patient simulation clinical skills programme for those training within psychiatry.

An additional award was also given to the Trust for its close collaboration with both carers and patients in designing and delivering its training programmes.

Ruth Monger, local director of Health Education England, said: “Well done to all the teams from Dorset HealthCare that received awards.

“The standard of nominations was very high and the Trust should be very proud of the work done by these staff. We look forward to continuing to work with Dorset HealthCare to improve workforce, education and training that supports the best care for people.”

Jacqueline Swift, chairman of Health Education England, Wessex, commended the team for being extremely organised, positive and innovative in working together to deliver a shared objective.

She added: “We were particularly impressed at how embedded the team is, working across the whole trust.

“The outreach training and support services were especially innovative for providing training across a large organisation, working in multiple sites."
