A GROUP of Weymouth College students who finished a National Citizen Service (NCS) course as part of their studies have shown their generosity after supporting two charities.

The students, who study childcare, decided to raise funds for You First Dorset and Cancer Research UK as part of their course.

The group were inspired to help You First Dorset after they heard a talk about the service it provides for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

They also wanted to help Cancer Research UK as this was an issue that many of the group had been effected by.

Milly Bell, who completed the NCS course, said: “NCS has been a good experience.

“I’ve got to do new things, have new experiences and help other people.”

Fellow student Holly Moore said: “NCS has given me the chance to help other people and give my time and efforts to worthy causes.”

To raise the funds, the group completed a sponsored ‘row across the Channel’ where they rowed over 55km, raising more than £250.

They used this money to buy items for Christmas gift boxes for the women and children at the refuge.

The rest of the money was donated to Cancer Research UK.

Sophie Peacefull, from You First Dorset collected the gifts on behalf of the charity.

She said: “The gifts are so gratefully received. The women and children will be really touched by what you’ve done, we are really thankful.”

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a Government-backed scheme aimed at making young people aged 16 to 17 more socially aware and responsible, whilst developing their skills and confidence.

As part of the programme participants get to go on an adventurous activity residential, find out more about their local community and make a difference by giving something back.

Team Leader Katy Parker said “The group have been really committed and passionate about helping other people.

“They have raised an extraordinary amount of money and made sure that they people at the refuge will have special Christmas.

“I’m really proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Weymouth College will be running the NCS programme again during summer 2016. If you or someone you know would like to find out more about getting involved email ncs@weymouth.ac.uk or visit the Weymouth College website for more information.
