EARLY morning commuters between Weymouth and Dorchester faced delays today after an articulated lorry got stuck under a bridge on Ridgeway Hill.

There were tailbacks and train services were stopped as police worked with the driver to get the lorry moved.

Network Rail engineers were called to assess for any potential damage.

Police said a motorist raised the alarm at 7am reporting a lorry on its way into Weymouth hitting the bridge near the hairpin bend.

The driver of the white DAF heavy tractor unit, registered to a Cornwall company, then called to say his vehicle had jammed but his load was safe. He lowered the suspension so it could be freed and backed up the hill.

Police tried to keep traffic flowing but it was another headache for drivers already held up by the temporary traffic lights on Dorchester Road.

A Network Rail spokesman said there appeared to be damage to a girder on the bridge and the railway line would remain closed until a full assessment was made.
