YOUNG people in the Littlemoor area of Weymouth can go up, up and away by taking part in a three-hour powerkiting session this weekend.

The event starts at noon on Saturday with the session being the first of two organised by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's community development team and run by the Paracademy.

A total of 24 young people aged 13-17 years are to benefit from the opportunity thanks to funding from the council's community sports development fund and the support of staff from Top Club Youth Club.

The adrenaline-fuelled activity will be held on the fields next to the Top Club in Louviers Road, Littlemoor, with 12 youngsters taking part in each session.

If the sport proves popular, it is hoped that powerkiting courses could become a regular event.

Leisure spokesman Coun Ian James said: "The sessions will give young people from Littlemoor the chance to try a sport they might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy.

"Our aim is to encourage local youngsters to get involved in positive activities and it's great to be working in partnership with the Paracademy and Top Club in doing this.

"The course in Littlemoor follows a similar session we ran with Paracademy in Westham which was absolutely superb, so I've got no doubt it will be a success."
