YOUNG people looking to cool off in Weymouth Harbour are dicing with death, police and council officials warned today.

Pier jumpers are not only playing a dangerous game but they are also breaking the law.

The harbour and piers have become a popular haunt for young bathers. But it is feared it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.

Officers are also using this opportunity to warn people who may get carried away with Trawler Race Day festivities on Monday to stay away from the Town Bridge.

PC Paul Holman said: "There has been an increase in pier and harbour jumping this season and although it may seem like a bit of fun to those involved it's actually very dangerous and a breach of the local authority bylaw.

"Many boats pass through the harbour, there are hidden obstacles under the water and the height of the water can be deceptive.

"We have some beautiful beaches in this area and I advise children to use those before there is a serious accident in the harbour."

He added: "People getting drunk and jumping off the Town Bridge is also unfortunately a common occurrence, especially around this Bank Holiday weekend, and I'd advise anyone of thinking of doing so to think again. Alcohol and swimming is a dangerous mix."

Councillor Tim Munro, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council spokesman for community health and safety, said as the Harbour Authority, the council will rigidly enforce bylaws that are designed to protect people's safety.

He said: "Jumping into Weymouth Harbour is dangerous and it is also against the law.

"The harbour is a busy working port with thousands of boats passing through every season.

"Jumping into the water here not only puts your own life at risk, but also the lives of others."
