TWO schemes to build apartments and flats in Weymouth could both get the go-ahead from planners.

The plans are for the 12-bedroom Glenburn Hotel and the former Furzey Court care home, both on Preston Road.

Devon and Dorset Properties wants permission for the first development which would involve the Glenburn Hotel being knocked down for four two-bedroom flats and four three bedroom flats.

Objectors are concerned at the height of the proposed building, loss of privacy, loss of a hotel and lack of parking. But members of Wednesday's Weymouth and Portland Borough Council planning and traffic committee will be told that the overall layout is 'spacious with a balance between hard landscaping, built form and green space and sits well within the existing footprint'.

A report recommends approval subject to 14 conditions including materials, landscaping and parking. It concludes: 'While the loss of the hotel may be regrettable, it is not of a scale or has the range of facilities to warrant protection.' A second scheme just a few doors down Preston Road also involves demolition and is also being recommended for approval. Martin Homes wants permission to knock down the former Furzey Court care home and build seven flats in its place.

The proposal is a resubmission following the withdrawal of a previous application and the refusal of another because of concerns over the mass and scale of the proposed building and the impact on trees.

The amended scheme is recommended for approval subject to nine conditions including materials, landscaping and hedge protection.
