THE sun came out for revellers enjoying Trawler Race Day along Weymouth Harbour.

The race itself got under way in murky conditions but the enthusiasm of the eight crews could not be dampened.

As the day grew brighter visitors flocked to the water's edge to enjoy a day of water-based excitement.

Other events included the famous birdman competition, a bass boat race, live bands and host of stalls.

There was also a special gig race between two local crews after yesterday's regatta fell foul of the weather.

The crew of Sally Jane took the award for the first crew home in the day's main event, followed by Amy Blue and Isle of Portland.

However, the prizes are not just about the speed as Hayley B from Guernsey picked up the title of best-dressed boat, while Nichola L was awarded for being the first boat to do the course correctly.

Sally Jane also scooped another prize for best dressed crew.

The bass boat race was won by the crew of Wakiki who were the first of nine competitors home.

The day was as much about charity as anything else, with money being collected for the MV Freedom boat for the disabled, Weymouth Lifeboat, Canoe Lifeguards, Weymouth Rowing Club and other local charities.

Sea Festival chairman Peter Targett said: "The trawler race was great, everything has been great.

"Everyone has behaved themselves, I think it's been very successful again. I think we have probably doubled what was raised last year."
