Mazda has added to its range with four new model options.

The 3 MPS has been praised as a benchmark in hot hatches and is thought to be the most powerful and quickest front-wheel-drive production hatchback in the world.

The driving experience is also up to scratch with excellent handling, build quality and control of torque steer - the car can apply its near-260 horses on to the road.

At its launch a few months ago, many journalists commented on the 3's lack of sporting add-ons such as spoilers or wings, and many of those were delighted to drive such a fast yet understated machine.

However, those who actually buy such cars in the UK apparently do require something more visually dramatic and Mazda has addressed the need by producing the new Sports Aero kit, above.

Consisting of a larger rear spoiler, sports door mirrors and, significantly, a spring kit with lowered suspension - 25mm at the front and 10mm at the rear - the kit costs a modest £500 and must be specified when buying the car; it's not available for retro-fitting.

Mazda anticipates that 70 per cent of buyers will specify the pack.

Although for everyday driving the Sports Aero pack is more about appearances than anything else, there is certainly a benefit in handling and grip at high speeds. Those who indulge in track days and the like will appreciate it.

Another new version of Mazda's 3 is the 2.0L diesel. It's an important addition to the range, which includes 1.6L diesels, and will undoubtedly boost sales.

The 143ps unit, already used in the popular Mazda 6, produces a hefty 266lb/ft of torque at just 2,000rpm, hits 62mph in 9.9 seconds, has a top speed of 126mph and returns a healthy 47.1mpg on the combined cycle.

Around 10 per cent of Mazda3s currently sold are the 1.6 diesel variants and the company expects this to jump to around 15 per cent with the introduction of the new model.

Coupled to a sporty six-speed box, it's a fine drive, surprisingly rewarding, and has great appeal, coupled with keen pricing. Expect to pay £16,730 and £17,910 for the Sports model, which adds 17-inch alloys, a Bose premium sound system, automatic wipers and lights, a sports bodykit and front fog lights to an already elaborate spec.

Two other new members of the Mazda family are limited special editions. The RX8 Kuro and the MX5 ZSport are being produced in runs of just 500 and 400 respectively.

The 2.0L ZSport provides exclusive added extras worth around £2,250 for a loading of just £1,045. These include unique paintwork, bespoke 17-inch alloy wheels, extra chrome exterior and interior touches, special leather upholstery with an aluminium dash panel and alloy pedals.

The RX-8 Kuro includes special black paintwork, and 18-inch dark silver alloy wheels.

Inside, there is unique stone-coloured leather with co-ordinating stitching, individually-numbered bespoke stainless scuff plates and leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake handle.

The Kuro carries more than £1,000-worth of extras but is actually £505 cheaper than a standard high power Mazda RX-8.
