NEW training facilities and a workshop specialising in dealing with the Terrier armoured tractor is being proposed for Bovington Camp.

Purbeck councillors will hear that the Ministry of Defence is making the application for the camp where Prince William is currently training - following his brother Prince Harry.

The spot where it would go, to the east of King George V Road, is hidden from the highway by an avenue of mature fir trees.

The proposal is also for garages, classrooms and simulators and a separate 8.5-metre high Dutch barn would provide a covered external teaching area and storage for the vehicles.

Councillors are being told: 'The application states that Bovington camp has been identified as the most viable national location for this project due to the existing facilities that can be shared including the all weather driving circuit, obstacle features and accommodation'.

Planners say the building is in line with what already exists at the camp and will not be visually intrusive or discordant within the landscape.

They state: 'Whilst technically the proposed cabins are located in the open countryside, it is quite clear that the proposal has an obvious affinity with the existing buildings and infrastructure within Bovington camp'.

They say the proposal 'is reasonable and necessary' to the military uses of the camp - and that planning permission should be granted.
