I WOULD like to publicly thank the members of the Weymouth and Portland Planning Committee who voted to reject the planning application to build 340 houses on a site between Dorchester Road and Nottington Lane.

This is a wise and sensible decision made by our councillors who listened to concerns voiced by worried Nottington residents about issues of safety and flooding.

Whilst I was not able to attend the meeting, I understand that members of the committee responded to the well researched objections that were made and acted with integrity and compassion by rejecting this application.

Our concerns in Nottington centre around road safety being compromised and a further exacerbation of flooding risks.

In particular our narrow lane cannot safely absorb an additional increase in traffic.

Any new development within the vicinity would impact significantly on the safety of road users notably pedestrians who include vulnerable schoolchildren, young families and the elderly.

An elderly pedestrian has already been killed on Nottington Lane; with this most rational decision the risks of further fatalities has been minimised.

Thank you Weymouth and Portland District Council for acting so responsibly.

It has been a hugely worrying time for the residents of Nottington.

We are thankful that our voices have been really listened to by councillors who by their actions have shown their support for the people they represent.

I feel that I can now continue to walk my dog and small grandchild up Nottington Lane in relative safety.
