DORSET Police is striving to go green', a new report reveals.

Mindful of the fact it is a major employer in the county, the force is keen to ensure its activities do not have an adverse impact on the environment.

It has prepared a green travel plan, is ensuring all vehicles in its transport fleet use biodiesel where possible and making arrangements throughout the force estate to recycle containers and compost kitchen waste. A staff member has been appointed environment champion' to lead promote ideas and make people aware.

A report to a Dorset Police Authority committee outlines other initiatives being investigated at force headquarters including reviewing the use of recycled paper and toner cartridges, and saving energy by shutting down computers.

In addition, the environmental impact of Dorset Police activities are set to be reviewed by the Carbon Trust.

Chief Constable Martin Baker says in the report: "Dorset Police are keen to meet their social obligations to the community.

"Together with the police authority we recognise that as a major employer and provider of services our activities have an impact on the environment."
