A NEW scheme where residents work with police and other agencies to tackle problems is taking off in the Park District of Weymouth.

And Partners and Communities Together (Pact) panel chairman Dave Burchill is encouraging more people to get involved.

Mr Burchill, who ran King Street post office with wife Genny until their retirement last year, says the problem of drug paraphernalia being left in the area is one of the priorities being tackled.

As a result of concerns it has been decided the area's Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Dave Hill and Ade Walker will carry needle boxes on their cycles so they can clear any drug paraphernalia.

A plan to site needle boxes in various locations has been ruled out.

Updates about work being done in the area will be posted on a new website - www.pactinthepark.terapad.com - created by the panel. There is space on the site for residents to blog' their views and a section in Polish for the benefit of the migrant workers who live in the community.

At the next meeting on July 23 at Park Community Centre in Chelmsford Street (start 7pm), residents will be told what has been done to address all three priorities.

Mr Burchill said: "Like any area the Park District has its ups and downs but I feel it's better than it used to be.

"Pact is a good initiative but it's important that more people attend the meetings.

"We would also like to hear from our Polish neighbours as they have a big presence in the community."
