A COMMUNITY leader is calling on rail chiefs to introduce a new multi-million pound tram-train project in Weymouth.

Network Rail currently has tram-trains on trial and is hoping to have a fleet of the vehicles in action in the UK within two years.

Weymouth and Portland Residents' Association deputy chairman Eric Alley believes the borough would be an ideal spot for the scheme.

The existing harbour tramway in Weymouth was opened in 1865 but regular passenger services stopped in 1987.

Plans for a new £1 million tramway in the town fell through and the last known use of the route was a special rail tour in May 1999.

But Mr Alley thinks the existing lines would provide the perfect starting block for a new tram-train service in the area.

He said: "Network Rail is drawing up plans with the Department of Transport to introduce tram-trains in Britain.

"It looks like quite an exciting and innovative project that would really suit us down here in Weymouth.

"We could extend the current lines and have a circular route also running along the Esplanade."

Mr Alley, 83, of Melcombe Avenue, said a new tram-train initiative would be a massive boost for Weymouth.

"Apparently they're lightweight vehicles which produce a lower carbon footprint, so they're environmentally friendly," he said.

"They can brake and accelerate quicker than trains so they would be more efficient and reliable.

"It was a real shame it never happened 10 years or so ago. It would be ideal, especially with the Olympics coming up in 2012."

Mr Alley will raise the idea at the next meeting of the Weymouth and Portland Residents' Association.

He added: "I understand they haven't decided on a definite route yet but are in talks with Northern Rail.

"Why build new tram lines somewhere without an existing network when we've got the makings of one down here?

"It would cost lots of money, but if there's a few million pounds in the kitty somewhere why not introduce the tramway in Weymouth?"

A Network Rail spokesman said Weymouth would be an unlikely location and the tram-train trial is already under way elsewhere.

He said: "Network Rail is working in partnership with Northern Rail and the Department for Transport on a small project that may see the introduction of a number of tram-trains on Northern Rail's network.

"We're at the very early stages of the scheme and over the coming months will be identifying a potential route."
