THE Caribbean came to Weymouth this week and schoolchildren got a taste of the tropical.
Wyvern Special School, off Dorchester Road, has been enjoying a Caribbean theme week giving pupils an insight into another way of life.
Visitor Kofi Leo taught a workshop of Caribbean music and storytelling, while teachers cooked up Caribbean food and showed the students some dance moves.
Teacher Dave Allen said: "The idea is to give pupils the opportunity to experience a faraway place, and we do it at a very sensory level.
"And we're hoping for good weather so we can play some beach cricket.
"It all culminates in a Caribbean party and we're involving pupils from our neighbouring schools Wey Valley and St Nicholas and St Laurence, as well as Westfield Technology College.
"It's a hands-on experience and the children really enjoy it because it's learning through activity.
"Kofi Leo was a highlight because he is enthusiastic, vibrant and fast-paced.
"Weymouth is really not very multicultural, so we tend to pick faraway countries with a different ethnicity and a culture that the children might at some point come across, like Caribbean or Indian."
