DID you see this monster in the bay this weekend?

She is the crude oil carrier Athenian Success and is one of the largest ships to ever visit Weymouth.

Marine photographer Steve Belasco went out to capture images and reports: “At a gross tonnage of 160,135 tonnes, she is 319 metres (1,047 feet) long and 60.5 metres (198 feet) wide - that’s longer than three football pitches end to end and wider than three cricket pitches.

“Fully-laden she has a deadweight of a mighty 317,441 tonnes and, fully laden, she would be 22.6 metres (74 feet) deep and unable to get into the bay at all!”

Athenian Success was built in 2010 and, although not quite as long, she is 1,119 tonnes larger than last year’s biggest visitor VK Eddie.

“The ship alongside is the tanker Atlantic which, at 4,341 tonnes, and 103 metres long, is no tiddler,” said Steve.

Success spent Saturday refuelling before departing in the evening for Venezuela.
