GROWING chilli plants at home has become an increasingly popular pastime for gardeners and chilli fans alike.
The Great Dorset Chilli Festival has announced the rules for the chilli plant growing competition at this years’ festival on August 5 at St Giles Park, Wimborne St Giles.
Chillies can take a while to germinate and ought to be grown now to maximise the chances of plants being laden with ripe fruit come judging day. This years’ competition starts with a level playing field – everyone has to grow the same variety of chilli, the Bulgarian Carrot chilli.
This chilli variety is well suited to the short UK growing season. The organisers can even supply the seeds, free of charge and with a basic growing guide. Chilli seeds need warmth to germinate and can take weeks to appear, so sowing before the end of February is advised.
