MORE engineering works are set to disrupt rail journeys on the Weymouth to Waterloo line.

Network Rail and South West Trains are advising passengers to check before travelling as major track upgrades at Waterloo and works elsewhere on the network, will reduce the number of trains running.

Network Rail’s £600,000 investment to replace sections of track at Waterloo, taking place over specified weekends, is part of a £800 million Waterloo and South West upgrade that will boost capacity by 30 per cent and improve reliability.

The railway at Waterloo includes one of the most heavily used sections of track in the country. Major works will also take place at the terminus in August.

Works between Bournemouth and Southampton next weekend will mean passengers will have to get buses between stations.

There will also be works at Waterloo over the weekend of March 18 and 19 and March 25 and 26 with Weymouth trains largely not affected.

Further ahead, buses will replace trains between Southampton and Bournemouth on Sunday, April 2.

Becky Lumlock, route managing director at Network Rail, said: “As part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, we’re carrying out essential work to make the railway more resilient and more reliable.

“The improvements we are making now will provide a better railway for the growing number of passengers that use the network, but there will be some significant changes to services over these two weekends so I’d like to ask passengers to check their journeys in advance.”
