FROM Bond to to Bambi, Harry Potter to The Lord of the Rings, all the fun of the silver screen is coming to the Dorchester Carnival this year.

The theme to the 2017 carnival is 'A Night at the Movies' and it is hoped that the people of Dorchester will come together and support one if the biggest dates of the county town's calendar.

The date has been set for Saturday, June 17 and will see the town come alive with floats depicting scenes from everybody's cinema favourites.

This year Brewery Square will be an integral part of carnival day. It has been decided that all walking entries will gather at the square rather than the market car park for safety reasons.

Judging of the walking groups will take place at Brewery Square in the fountain area at 4pm. After the judging, the entrants will make their way back to Fairfield Car Park ready to move off with the procession at 5.30pm. Floats will move off first and walking groups will follow for safety reasons.

Organisers from each group will be responsible for their group’s safety. In particular, children are to be supervised in the car park due to the traffic. If children are walking beside a float, as part of the procession, they should be well clear of the wheels as last year there were instances of children walking too close to lorry wheels.

Floats will assemble in Fairfield car park from 2.30pm, with judging at 3.30pm.

Charity stalls will be also be in South Street during the day.

There will be live music entertainment from 2pm at Brewery Square, films shown on the big screens and there will be a ‘Silent Disco’ from 7pm in the fountain area.

Mayor of Dorchester, Tim Harries and his wife Anita are encouraging the county town to get involved and make it an even bigger success this year.

Anita said: "The theme choice is vast, so there is no excuse for dragging your heels and saying 'I don’t know what to do'."

Volunteers and marshals are being sought to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Care South has agreed to be the main sponsor, along with backing from Brewery Square. But more sponsors are needed, including businesses or individuals to put up the money for the raffle prizes, one of the carnival’s biggest fundraisers.

Roads will be closed as usual from 4.30pm to 7pm

Entry forms can be found on the carnival website, dorchestercarnival.org, as well as details of the procession route.
