HUNDREDS of pounds' worth of damage was done to a woman's home after it was hit by a passing vehicle.

It is the second time Victoria Dines's home in Fortuneswell, Portland has been struck and damaged by a vehicle.

Miss Dines, 34, returned from work to find extensive damage to the underside of her first floor bedroom window.

She said: "The cladding from the bottom of the window has been damaged, one of the cladding panels has come away and trimmings on the window have come off.

"The underside of the window has been damaged too.

"I'm completely gutted."

In 2000, the same window was damaged after it was struck by a sonar dome being transported on a wide-load lorry.

Miss Dines said the cost of repairing that damage was £800.

Upholsterer Miss Dines, who owns Coastline Covers Ltd in Chickerell Road, Weymouth, said the new damage would not have happened had the council not recently made Fortuneswell a two-way route for vehicles completing emergency work on the island.

She said: "The council needs to have a better look at this when they're creating routes for this kind of work.

"They need to make sure everything's in place to ensure buildings won't be damaged by passing vehicles.

"I'm also worried that if vehicles are mounting the pavement to get down the road and I step out my front door straight on to the pavement at the wrong time, am I going to step into the path of a lorry?"

Miss Dines added that she hopes the damage to her property is superficial and not structural.

A Dorset County Council spokesman said: "The resurfacing work on Portland High Street was urgently needed to address the serious deterioration of the road over the winter and a closure was unavoidable.

"Unfortunately, there were no alternative routes on Portland through which traffic could be directed other than Fortuneswell.

"We have listened to residents' concerns, but we cannot put temporary barriers along the pavement because this would jeopardise pedestrian safety. Likewise, there is not enough room to narrow the road and still maintain two-way traffic.

"However, the High Street works are due to be completed by the weekend and the diversion will come to an end."
