FORMER chart-topper Paul Young was in action in Weymouth last night - singing goodbye to a tea room named in honour of his band.

The Cactus Tea Rooms, at the end of the Pleasure Pier, has been forced to close to make way for the Pavilion development.

So the singer put on a special farewell performance with band Los Pacaminos for cake-making manager and superfan Sandy Hawkins.

The audience at Southill Snooker Club were treated to a selection of Ry Cooder and Los Lobos-inspired tunes at the special gig.

Sandy, whose café is covered with photos of Paul Young, started her business 11 years ago and named it in honour of her favourite singer.

All musicians in the seven-piece Los Pacaminos band share a love for Mexican and Texan sounds so she chose the symbol of the cactus.

Paul has vowed to sample Sandy's special delicacy - 'Paul's plumptious bread pudding' - one last time before the café closes its doors.

The Cactus Tea Rooms is on a six-month lease with the council, and is expected to close in October in preparation for the Pavilion revamp.

"We have to face it and I'm looking around for another place in Weymouth to reopen," Sandy said.
