BRIDPORT'S St Catherine's School is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with a whole series of events starting with a cream tea for past pupils and staff.

The cream teas were washed down with memories and displays of more than 50 old photographs, mostly supplied by Councillor Ron Coatsworth whose late wife was the head teacher until her retirement in 1985.

St Catherine's first opened its doors on April 12, 1967 with pupils from two Roman Catholic schools closed because of their outdated buildings. These schools were Chideock RC (Spindlebury) and the Visitation Convent.

Reunion organiser Natalie Williams said: "Mr Ronald Coatsworth, the husband of the late Mrs Coatsworth, former headmistress of Chideock RC School and St Catherine's, has loaned 11 years of class photos starting from the academic year of 1974-75 through to 1984-85."

The cream teas will be followed by a celebration barbecue today and a special mass taken by Bishop Christopher Budd on Tuesday.

Then on Wednesday all the pupils at the school will be taken to the Palace Cinema.
