CHILDREN at Wyke Regis Junior School were given expert advice on beach safety before they head off for a summer of seaside fun.

Two Weymouth Lifeguards came into the school to put on demonstrations and give advice to year three and four pupils. Year three class teacher Vivian Sloan said: "They played some games with the children and did role play where the children had to pretend to be drowning.

"They showed them how to attract attention by clenching the fist and shouting rather than just waving. They also taught them what the different coloured flags mean."

Mrs Sloan, who is also the school's special education needs co-ordinator, said the children took all the information they received on board. She added: "They took a very lively and enthusiastic part in it, I have to say."

Mrs Sloan's son Andrew was one of the lifeguards doing the demonstration. He and his colleague Tristan Shepherd were visiting a further five schools on the same day to spread the message of beach safety.
