TEDDY bears and their pals will be converging on the Borough Gardens on Sunday for the rescheduled annual Teddy Bears' Picnic.

Rain stopped play last month and Dorchester Town Council was forced to abandon the event for only the second time in 20 years.

But organisers are hoping Sunday's event will be fine and dry and are urging as many people as possible to bring their favourite furry friend down to the park for a fun afternoon.

Town clerk Dennis Holmes said over the years the picnic had given thousands of children, parents and grandparents an enjoyable, free afternoon of entertainment.

He added: "I was obviously tempting fate when I celebrated the return of the Teddy Bears' Picnic to its spiritual home the Borough Gardens, following completion of the refurbishment project.

"However, it's only the second time in 20 years that we've had to postpone, so I don't suppose we can complain too bitterly.

"As always we are extremely grateful to the many local individuals, organisations and businesses without whom we couldn't run the event.

"A special thank-you should go to Ridgeway Radio, the radio station for Dorset County Hospital, which has taken a lead role in the picnic for many years now."

The picnic gets under way on Sunday from noon until 4.30pm, and there is still chance to help ensure the day is a big success.

"If anyone has any ideas or is interested in helping on the day they can contact the council at 19 North Square or by telephoning 01305 266861.

"And don't forget to bring your teddy," said Mr Holmes.

n The Borough Gardens will be playing host to the Mill Street Jazz Band this Saturday in a concert organised by the Friends of the Borough Gardens.

Music starts at 6pm but concert-goers are encouraged to bring picnics from 5.30pm. The refreshment kiosk will be open on the evening.
