Commuters faced more misery today as disruption on a major rail network continued.

People were warned to avoid travelling to London Waterloo on South West Trains services yesterday due to a points problem and derailed train near the station.

Following a day of delays and cancellations yesterday, passengers faced further chaos this morning whilst work was carried out on the track. Some services could be disrupted until the end of the day today.

Network Rail released a statement yesterday saying: "South West Trains and Network Rail are advising passengers not to travel to and from Waterloo today or tomorrow (Wednesday, 16 August) after a passenger train struck a stationary barrier train at very low speed and became partially derailed at 5.40am this morning.

"The incident happened as the train was pulling away from its platform at Waterloo. There were no injuries to the 23 passengers or two members of staff on board the train.

"The barrier train was in place to separate the ongoing engineering works at Waterloo from the operational train services.

"A very limited service is now running to and from Waterloo, which is expected for the rest of today and tomorrow.

"An investigation to establish the cause of the incident is underway. It would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause of the incident at this time.

"Upgrade work to extend platforms at Waterloo continues."

Work to 're-rail' the train was completed overnight as Network Rail examined what, if any, damage was caused to the track.

As a result of yesterday's incidents, trains were unable to use platforms 1 to 13 at Waterloo.

SWT were advising that services running to and from Waterloo and Vaxuhall stations may have been cancelled, delayed or revised.

Trains travelling from Weymouth were terminating at Basingstoke.

Most trains experienced severe delays and were subject to short notice alterations.

Tickets were being accepted via other routes on Great Western Railway via Reading.
