People are being asked to dress in their finest threads for a charity event in memory of a Weymouth Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan.

Shelley Robertson, from Weymouth, is organising a Black Tie and Masquerade Ball at Weymouth Pavilion in memory of Royal Marine James Wright, who was 22 when he was killed in Afghanistan whilst serving with 42 Commando.

Shelley was pregnant at the time of his death and is supported by Scotty’s Little Soldiers, who are dedicated to supporting children who have lost a parent serving in the Armed Forces, since their daughter Lily was born in 2011.

She is organising the event on November 4 following the success of two charity fun days. Shelley said: “All money raised is going to the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, who support bereaved British forces children, and this is includes mine and James’s daughter Lily.

“We have organised two family fun days this year and last, raising in excess of £7,500 for the charity, and this event gives adults a chance to have a child free evening, get glammed up and let their hair down for a fantastic cause.”

Support offered to children by the charity includes activities such as holiday breaks and group events, personal development assistance through educational grants, and access to bereavement counselling.

Tickets cost £45 per head, including a welcome drink, three course meal, live music from The Mighty Fine, entertainment from Art Of The Impossible Magicians and casino tables, as well as access to an auction and raffle.

The event is sponsored by O’Three, 3D Health and Fitness at Wey Valley, Weyline Taxis, Saint Security Limited and The BOSS Hub.
