Coastguards and lifeboat volunteers had a busy day on patrol yesterday.

Weymouth’s RNLI inshore lifeboat was initially paged at 2.20pm to reports of three people in the sea off Portland breakwater, with one person clinging to the upturned hull of their capsized sailing dinghy.

The boat had capsized just inside the northern entrance to Portland Harbour.

On arrival, the crew found the safety boat from Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy had the three people aboard and was towing the vessel back to Castle Cove.

The lifeboat crew and the paged coastguard team were stood down.

Shortly after 4pm Wyke Regis coastguard’s deputy station officer was called to see a boat back to safety.

The small boat’s engine had failed with two adults and three children aboard in the Ringstead area.

The vessel was towed back to Weymouth harbour where safety advice was given.
