Residents flocked to a community fun day in Dorchester where talented creatives were given the opportunity to show off their work.

The event called Inspire Together was held at the Corn Exchange on Saturday and was organised by the Inspire Dorset group.

The fun day marked the end of a 12-week programme completed by the group and funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund.

The programme aims to help people get back into employment and explore their creativity, and the event was an opportunity for the group's members to connect with aspiring artists, musicians and photographers, whilst developing their own skills and employability.

The fun day was free to attend and showcased local art, music, performing arts, crafts, jewellery, photograph and more. While offering a number of workshops.

Ben Gilbert, who has been involved with Inspire Dorset, said the group has inspired him to pursue a career in exotic pets.

Mr Gilbert showcased some of his pets at the event, including a millipede and an African Pygmy Hedgehog.

He said: “I would not be here if it wasn’t for coaches. This gives me a chance to show what I do. The dream is to one day have my own exotic pet shop.”

Lee Woods, another member of the group said: “I am looking to return to work and am hoping my efforts pay off as well as giving something back to other people.

Angie Seymour, co-ordinator of the Inspire Dorset Group, said: “I have been working with the group as well as with the volunteers. I am quite delighted, it is nice everybody is where they should be. We have seen massive changes in the whole group from our introduction meeting in November. They have learnt new skills and their confidence has increased.”

Deputy Mayor Tim Harries attended the event and said: “Through the dedicated work of seven people today has been possible. They have worked together over 12 weeks to plan, create, research and deliver this wonderful community event for local people.

“There are four free workshops for young people and children to get involved with, an array of talented creative people who are displaying their work, a fabulous raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and free coffee and cake for all.”
