A little rain was not going to stop a cancer support group from raising vital funds to help bring new facilities to cancer patients.

The GO Girls!, who support women with gynaecological cancers, are hoping to reach their final £50,000 target towards the Cancer Appeal at Dorset County Hospital.

To help them get to their fundraising goal, the group attended this year’s Women Action Network Dorset (WAND) ‘Women’s Week’, which culminated in the annual showcase of all things ‘women’ at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester.

As well as fundraising, the GO Girls! were there to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, together with selling hand-painted notelets and prints, painted by women with gynaecological cancers.

Teresa Wolff, vice chairman of GO Girls!, said: “Many women visited our stand to learn more about the key symptoms. Our campaign this year to highlight key symptoms through our simple reminder key card, the ABDO Code.”

Teresa added the code is a simple way of highlighting the main symptoms and stands for:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating or feeling full more quickly
  • Disturbed bowel or needing to urinate more often
  • Organise and appointment with your GP

“We know earlier diagnosis is likely to improve survival and with 11 women dying every day from ovarian cancer, women really need to make themselves body aware, “ Teresa said.

Now, with just £10,000 to go to reach their final fundraising target, the GO Girls! are looking for a generous business or individual to help them achieve their goal.

The first person or business to donate £10,000 will be treated by the GO Girls! to a trip to Highgrove on June 21 with a Champagne tea for two.

“We know it’s a big ask, but with one in two of us likely to get cancer at some point in their lives, we hope a generous donor or business would like to join with us to meet our final goal,” Teresa said.

The offer closes on April 30 and any funds donated will go towards the Cancer Appeal, a project which will develop cancer facilities for patients in North, South and West Dorset and bring radiotherapy services to Dorchester for the first time.
