Have you ever rolled a hard-boiled egg down a hill? No? Here’s your chance.

A cascade of decorated eggs will be racing down a Dorchester street to raise money for charity in the 2018 egg rolling competition.

The event was first held last year and was the brainchild of the then Mayor and Mayoress, Tim and Anita Harries, along with the help of town crier, Alistair Chisholm.

The egg rolling was such a success that a date has already been set for its return.

It will be held this Saturday, March 24, from 11am onwards at Friary Hill.

Mr Chisholm is looking forward to the day and is excited to see how creative people have got with their eggs.

He said: “It’s like a big street party really - but with eggs too. The residents get together and make tea, coffee and some snacks, whilst I get the very important job of overseeing the egg rolling.

“Last year was such a fantastic day, it was really warm if I remember correctly and we had so many people turn up. It was just fun, simple as that. We couldn’t not do it again this year could we? People would be disappointed.

“We had some really well-decorated eggs last year - we had eggs dressed as pirates and all sorts. People get very creative, it was fantastic to see.

“We wanted it to be an event that everyone could afford, so it’s just £1 per egg and all money will be going to the Mayor’s chosen charities. The event went on for about two hours last year, it’s not long, but we had so much fun in that time.

“A bit more thought than you would think went into the egg rolling - what is the best way to roll it?

“We also will have prizes for the best decorated egg and for the fastest egg roll.”

Organisers have said that all eggs must be laid by chickens and be hard boiled – or they will smash. Every one must have a bright marking or decoration to distinguish them from the flock as they tumble down the hill.

It costs just £1 to enter an egg. Entrants simply need to turn up on the day with their hard boiled eggs decorated and ready to roll.
