A new qualification aimed at boosting academic results and self-confidence is being launched at a Weymouth school.

In partnership with 3d Leisure, who operate the school gym for community use, the Wey Valley School will be launching the new ‘Energise and Educate’ course in time for the next academic year.

Marie Claridge, Wey Valley’s head of Physical Education said: “I’m really excited about this new opportunity for our students. We expect to see the wider benefits of health and fitness in all aspects of classroom learning.”

She added the course would run through Years 9 to 11, and students would receive a level two qualification they could take on into sixth form or college.

Applying the principles of 3d Leisure’s ‘Energise and Educate’ programme, the course will aim to increase fitness levels to improve self-confidence, self-esteem and most importantly academic results.

Students will study elements of sports science and health whilst taking part in a series of fitness programmes using ‘Myzone’ heart rate monitoring equipment, provided by Community Leisure Services Partnership, a charity which works with 3d Leisure.

Mark Bremner, managing director of 3d Leisure, who has championed the programme, said: “3d Leisure established a partnership with the school back in 2016 and, having visited schools in the USA who have embraced the Energise and Educate programme.

“Wey Valley has a fantastic gym, with over 50 pieces of cardio and strength equipment along with two exercise studios for pupils to use.”

Sara Adams, Principal at the Wey Valley School also welcomed this new initiative and said it was an excellent development of school partnership with 3d Leisure.

She said: “This new qualification will support the school’s sports college legacy.”
