Well, well – an ancient tradition will be marked in Upwey this weekend.

The annual Upwey Well Dressing will be installed at the famous Upwey Wishing Well in the early afternoon on Saturday, May 5.

The community gets together each year to dress the well in a theme in aid of local charities.

Well dressing is a picture made of natural materials which will be installed in the arches by the well. There will also be 'rustic celebrations' – singing and Morris Dancing – as the well dressing boards are taken in a procession from the village hall to the well.

Wells and springs have been venerated and decorated since ancient times, often associated with the celebration of pure or a healing water source.

The most famous dressings take place in Derbyshire during the summer where village wells are decorated with flowers and other natural materials.

The spring at Upwey is the largest in the south of England and well dressing was introduced there in 1986.

The display is expected to last for the whole of May. As the well dressing is in the Wishing Well Cafe garden, access is only available during the café open times – 10am to 5pm.

This year the well dressing is helping to raise funds to provide a defibrillator at the Old School Village Hall in Upwey.
