A DIRTY thoroughfare off Weymouth seafront got a spring clean thanks to the efforts of a community action group.

WeyPROGRESS, a new group launched in Weymouth in a bid to make the town ‘feel more loved’, won a national competition to secure an expert clean-up for the area.

The competition was run by cleaning firm Kärcher and Keep Britain Tidy, and urged entrants to put forward their local towns which needed some TLC to be in with a chance of winning.

WeyPROGRESS asked for the seafront underpass, which goes under King Street and the Esplanade, to be cleaned up.

With the help of a team from Kärcher, volunteers from WeyPROGRESS descended on the underpass to wash, scrub and clean the dirty walls.

Nigel Shearing, from WeyPROGRESS, said: ‘It’s been really great to see members of the Weymouth community pitch in and help – the underpass is looking fantastic.

"We’re so thankful to Kärcher and Keep Britain Tidy for helping us make this clean possible and we hope that everyone will once again enjoy walking though the underpass on the way to the seafront."

WeyPROGRESS was started for people who “want to make a difference and think they can help.”

The aim is to bring interested people together to do “simple, but great things around the town.”

Jack Sweeney, Marketing Director at Kärcher UK said: “We have always focused on inspiring communities to come together and take pride in their local area.

"It was a fantastic day and showed that if you all pull together you can get great results – the area is spotless and ready for people to enjoy again."

Richard McIlwain, Deputy Chief Executive at Keep Britain Tidy, added: "Keep Britain Tidy works really hard to make sure the people of local communities are proud of the places they work and live in. We’re delighted we could join forces with Kärcher and help the community of Weymouth give a fresh look to the underpass."
