IMPERSONATING the police is a very serious offence in this country, punishable by a hefty thwack in the wallet or a lengthy stay at one of Her Majesty’s special guest houses.

But for Synchronicity UK, it’s not so much an impersonation as a celebration, a celebration of the fabulous music of The Police and their main man Sting, who at one time, back in the early Eighties, were perhaps the biggest band in the known galaxy.

And as anyone who witnessed the band’s show at the Weymouth Pavilion last year will testify, it’s a jolly good night out, jam-packed with all those classic songs and top-drawer musicianship.

The eight-piece band, all of whom have form as long as Stretch Armstrong’s arms, are doing it all again with a show at the Bay Theatre at Weymouth College on Thursday, June 14.

And the line-up is not so much a who’s who but more of an identity parade of the prime suspects from the south Dorset music scene.

Rob Paull is on lead vocals and keys, and he’s joined by his Fluke muckers Stevie Garden on guitar and Rod Teague on bass.

Aiding and abetting are Paul Graham out of Chill on guitar and twiddling synth programmes, Wendy Allen on sax with Jess Upton, from handbag revisionists The Guilty Pleasures, and Rhea Soulsby, who has served time with And Finally, the Phil Collins tribute, on backing vocals.

Holding it all together at the back is drummer Dave Wallace who has thumped tubs for David Essex and The Osmonds.

They’ll be playing all The Police biggies, from Roxanne to Every Breath You Take, Message In a Bottle to Walking on the Moon, plus that one that goes Da Doo Da Da, Da Doo Da Da, along with choice selections from Sting’s material, including Fields of Gold and Englishman in New York.

Support on the night comes from the college music students and tickets are a mere £12.50 from 01305 208702, or you could take a chance and get in on the door on the night.

Moving on, and barely days after the super soaraway success of the ska festival, the Spice Ship at Preston in Weymouth is hosting Roll With It.

It’s an all-day bash next Saturday, June 16, featuring music from the Alternative/Indie/Britpop stable with FIVE bands for your delight and edification.

You’ve got The Stereoironics, Pity the Foo, Blurd, Oasiss and Peacock Suit and there’s a top prize of a packet of cheese and onion crisps to the first person who can work out which band they’re each paying tribute to.

Send your entries to me on the back of a £10 note, please.

It all kicks off from 1pm and there are a few tickets left at £12.50 from the pub on 01305 834651.

And if you’d like your live music event listed on this page, send all the details to gigs@dorsetecho.co.uk.

Till next time...
