People hitting the beach this summer can get fit at the same time.

Weymouth Beach is playing host to a new summer sports event this month, ahead of the town's high profile volleyball tournament on the sands.

Beachfit Weymouth will offer a weekend of fitness classes and activities for residents and visitors.

People can book one class or for the weekend, choosing from a range of classes from cycle spinning to yoga and body balance.

There's also beach games, dance classes, Zumba, sea aerobics, jogging and talks.

Fitness fans will also be able to get their feet wet and try water-based activities over the weekend including paddleboarding and kayaking.

The event, supported by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's events team and fitness clothing brand GymPro Apparel, will help launch a summer of sport on Weymouth Beach which also includes beach rugby, the charity volleyball tournament sponsored by Battens and the Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic which runs from Friday, July 27 to Sunday, July 29.

Beachfit organiser David Heath, from Active Fitness Club, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to launch this new high energy fitness event on Weymouth Beach this summer and work with the established beach sports programme."

The water activities are being provided by Adventure 4all and its director Alex Sergison said: "I am really pleased that the chance for people to have a go at water sports will once again be taking place on Weymouth Beach this summer.

"It is an important part of the legacy from 2012 and something that we hope will inspire participants to spend more time outdoors enjoying these activities.

"Weymouth and Portland really is a world class venue for watersports and everyone should be given opportunity to get involved."

Beachfit comes ahead of the Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic, the beach's biggest annual sports event which has been a feature on the sands for more than 30 years.

Volleyball tournament director Graeme Sawyer said: “We are amazed to be in our third decade of hosting the country's most popular men and women’s beach volleyball championships with the best players already signed up.

"With fabulous support from the local club, volunteers and the local business community this year promises to be one of the best ever."

Fellow director Peter Bennett added: "We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with GymPro Apparel and look forward to the launch and excitement forms this new event."

Beachfit will run for three days from Friday, July 20 to Sunday, July 22.
