A Weymouth motorcyclist has died in hospital following a crash in Crossways.

This incident happened at 2.42pm yesterday, Tuesday, on Warmwell Road close to the entrance of Hybris Business Park.

Police said the crash involved a black Land Rover Discovery and a blue Aprilia motorcycle.

The rider of the motorcycle, aged 51, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he sadly died. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver of the Land Rover, a man aged in his 40s, was uninjured.

The road was closed to allow collision investigators to carry out a full and thorough examination of the scene.

Police Inspector Joe Pardey, of the traffic unit, said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or the driving of either the car or the motorcyclist prior to the incident to please contact Dorset Police.

“I would particularly like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage that could assist with my investigation.

“Also, I wish to thank the public for their patience while the road closure was in place to allow emergency services to deal with the collision.”

An air ambulance landed in a field in the village as part of the emergency response operation, pictured below.

Warmwell Road was closed into the night as police investigators worked at the scene to try and piece together what happened.

Patricia Turner and her daughter Abi, who live adjacent to the scene of the crash, told the Echo that they had rushed to help out when the incident occurred.

"We were sitting inside when we heard a loud bang. The loudest I've ever heard," Mrs Turner said.

Mrs Turner, a Crossways resident for some 30 years - meanwhile noted that crashes in the area were a common occurrence, pointing to one five weeks previously involving three cars on the same stretch of road.

Abi Turner, who recently completed a foundation course in health and social care, explained that she had put her training to good use by running to Crossways GP surgery for a defibrillator, returning with a doctor.

"I took blankets out to the victim," she said, adding that two workers from Dorset Waste Partnership had been first on the scene and had tended to the injured motorcyclist.

The 21-year-old, who works at the nearby Co-op, said she had also helped out by taking lemonade to the emergency service personnel on the scene.

Susan Way, wheeling her bicycle past the crash scene, agreed that the road was a dangerous one and said there was a lot of dips on the road.

Another resident, Gill Barton, said she had come down to see what was happening after hearing a helicopter - understood to be the air ambulance - land in a nearby field.

"It was there four around three-quarters of an hour, then it took off again," said Mrs Barton, who has lived in the village since 2001.
