A fire crew from Weymouth worked to put out a post box, which was on fire in the early hours of this morning.

The incident took place on Melbury Road in Weymouth.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 4.58am.

A fire service spokesman said: “A crew from Weymouth Fire Station attended reports of a post box on fire in Melbury Road, Weymouth. On arrival, crews found one post box on fire and used on ‘aquapac’ to extinguish the fire."

He added: “Royal Mail have been informed of the incident and no further actions were required.”

Dorset Police have been informed about the incident. 

A police spokesman said they received a report from the fire service at 5.23am, that a post box was alight near the junction with Abbotsbury Road. It had been extinguished. 

It is not yet known how the fire started, but a police spokesman said they cannot confirm or speculate at this stage.
