Ninety years after their forefathers did, a charity took a pilgrimage to remember the fallen.

Members of the Abbotsbury and Portesham Branch of The Royal British Legion, Kevin Donnelly and Steve James, joined thousands on a pilgrimage of remembrance to a First World War battlefield, with 19 branches from Dorset represented at the event, which was followed by a parade and ceremony in Ypres.

The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), is one of the largest events in the charity's history.

The event marks 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 First World War veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the war had ended.

That visit included a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission's Menin Gate Memorial, where a service took place to commemorate the beginning of the Hundred Days Offensive which took place 10 years previously, and remembered those who never returned.

Legion members, Kevin and Steve attended the event as a standard bearer and wreath layer respectively.

The pair joined more than 2,200 other legion representatives and dignitaries, including civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who took part.

Once at the Menin Gate, Steve laid a wreath on behalf of the Abbotsbury and Portesham Community, which included a message of remembrance from community.

Speaking before the pilgrimage started, Steve James, chairman of the Abbotsbury and Portesham branch of The Royal British Legion, said: "Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the legion community to come together and bear our standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War.

"The Abbotsbury and Portesham Branch looks forward to proudly representing Abbotsbury and Portesham at the event."

The wreaths will be on display to the general public at Menin Gate until the end of August.

Speaking after the event, Steve said: "It was an honour and a privilege to represent the local community in this act of Remembrance and Dedication to those 28 from out community who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the war."
