VOLUNTEERS are being invited to put on their walking shoes or take to the pedals for their local church.

Ride and Stride for Churches will take place across the county on Saturday, September 8.

Organised by the Dorset Historic Churches Trust (DHCT), participants are being invited to cycle, walk and/or ride a horse to Dorset's churches and chapels on the day from 10am until 6pm.

The event raises money for the maintenance and repair of Dorset's historic churches, of which there are more than 300, with all sponsorship split between DHCT and the nominated church or charity.

Chairman of the DHCT, Simon Pomeroy, said: "We are very much looking forward to our single fund-raising day and hope to see many people out and about enjoying the Dorset countryside, both those who are new to the event as well as our seasoned cyclists.

"Last year, we raised more than £86,000 in sponsorship funds, supported by 175 churches taking part.

"Without the vital support of the community, we couldn't continue the work we do to help preserve the county's churches and we hope even more people and churches will take part this year.

"Let's all get pedalling for our parishes.

"We will try to arrange a welcome and some refreshments in every church on Saturday, September 8."

With no official route for the ride, participants can visit any of the 300 churches across Dorset's towns and villages, some of which are not regularly open.

Pledges will be gathered either on paper or through Just Giving on the trust's website.

Since 1991, the trust has raised more than £1,000,000 for Ride and Stride for Churches.

Fifty per cent of the funds raised may be returned to the church or charity chosen by the rider.

One substantial grant was given towards replacing the roof of the north aisle at St Mary's Church in Bridport.

Chairman of Churches Together in Bridport and District, the Reverend Philip Ringer, said: "This is truly an ecumenical event where churches and other places of worship open their doors and welcome those who ride and stride in order to raise money for their local church. I hope people will participate with generosity."

There is often keen competition between churches to gain the most sponsorship and since 1999, the trustees have awarded the Morshead Trophy to the parish whose efforts they consider to be the most deserving of recognition.
