HUNDREDS of runners turned out to take part in an iconic isle race - and raise funds for an important cause.

More than 200 people took part in this year's Dumble Bimble on Portland, raising £1,100 for Weldmar Hospicecare, with even more money still to come from sponsorship.

This event is put on every year by The Royal Manor of Portland Athletic Club to remember Alan and Andrew Dumble who both lost their lives to cancer.

This run is in its 23rd year and organisers say it gets more popular each year.

Andy Dehavilland, race director and his co-director Jan Camp said that every year they are pleasantly surprised at the numbers of people who turn up to support this.

They added: "Not only those taking part but the many spectators who encourage them and take part in the raffle to raise even more money. They also wish to thank the massive support they get from members of the club, as without Marshalls, time keepers etc it would not be possible to hold such events. Thanks go to Tesco, Easton Co-op, Pete's Hardware and Island Beauty for donating raffle prizes."

They were pleased to have the company of Trevor Lewis, from the hospice, who started the five mile run and 'wonderful' supporter, Debbie Lindoe, from Tesco who started the 2k.

Mr Dehavilland said: "It was good to see so many youngsters on the run, those under 11, accompanied by parents making it a real family occasion. Hopefully some of these will be our club runners of the future. As always we were supported by members of Portland United first and reserve teams and some members of Portland Youth. It was good, as always, to welcome friends from Egdon Heath and St. Paul's Harriers."
