Marine-themed art workshops are being held at Weymouth Library this Saturday, and everyone is invited to get creative and enjoy the display.

Artist-in-residence Peter Margerum has been hosting the 'Stem the Tide' project over the summer holidays, helping families and young people create weird and wonderful 3D artworks using recycled plastics and other items salvaged from the beach.

The project has given residents and holidaymakers an opportunity to get hands-on and experiment with making sculptures from a wide selection of materials, whilst learning traditional methods.

This weekend's finale will see two final sessions being held on Saturday September 8, to give the creatively-minded a last chance to create a permanent piece of art for display in the library.

Peter Margerum is an experienced collaborative artist with a focus is on capturing identity and sense of place.

Peter said: "As well as focussing on a marine theme throughout the summer, this weekend's display will be staged around the venue using a distinctly traditional 'ladders and chairs' feel to it, in keeping with the library theme.

"One of the things that people have particularly enjoyed during the sessions is that we use traditional techniques when it comes to the fixtures and fittings of the sculptures, rather than modern methods such as glue or tape.

"In today's digital age, I believe it's more important than ever to take a DIY approach and get hands-on when it comes to being creative, and the final display in the library reflects this.

"Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the final sessions on Saturday - whether they take part or not, there will be something to enjoy visually."

The residency is the first in a four-part series being held over the next two years, as part of a ‘Libraries as a Cultural Hub’ project.

Other events coming up at the library include a visit from the Story Boat at half term, as well as more arts, music and dance events. To find out more visit the Dorset Libraries Facebook page or follow on Twitter @DorsetLibraries
