DORCHESTER Town assistant-manager Trevor Senior feels the Magpies’ 3-0 FA Cup first qualifying round win over Wimborne Town can give his side a “lift”.

After weathering a strong first-half for the visitors, in which goalkeeper Kingsley Latham was by far the busier of the two glovemen, Dorchester enjoyed a brighter second half.

Midfielder Billy Lowes finished off a delightful cross from Cameron Murray to open the scoring in the 66th minute before Dorchester added further strikes from substitutes Aaron Rodriguez and Luke Winsper.

Victory handed manager Steve Thompson’s men a second qualifying round tie at Tiverton Town on Saturday week and at least £6,000 in prize money.

Senior told Echosport: “We’ve got a game against a team in our league, we can now look forward to that a week on Saturday, whereas we could only talk about it before the game.

“It will just give the lads a little bit of a lift, and (it was) the first clean sheet of the season in league and cup games, so that was really pleasing.”

Elaborating on an improved second-half showing against Wimborne, Senior explained that better passing was a big factor in sealing the win.

He said: “I thought the game opened up a bit in the second half. When they got the first goal they came at us but I thought we kept the ball a bit better as the game went on in the second half.

“First-half we just didn’t put any passes together and when we did, they got men behind the ball. I don’t know whether they tired or we just played better but we moved the ball well and got into some good positions.

“We could’ve had a couple more but (for) the wrong selection of shot or pass at the time, but we’ll take the 3-0.”

Dorchester are set to be without Ash Pope for at least two weeks after the striker injured medial knee ligaments in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Wimborne.

Neil Martin continues to struggle with a groin issue and Ross Carmichael, who was an unused substitute in the replay, is still recovering from a knee problem.

Murray picked up cramp in the latter stages of the replay but is expected to be fit for Saturday’s clash at Beaconsfield Town (3pm).
