JOIN the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) for an evening of autumn classics at Weymouth Pavilion.

On Thursday September 20, the BSO will be performing some of the best-loved music in the orchestral repertoire in its Autumn Classics concert.

The BSO is delighted to welcome its new Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association Marta Gardolińska, who will be making her debut with the orchestra in her new role.

Mendelssohn’s last large work was his Violin Concerto, which forms an important part of the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular violin concertos in history. This piece takes the audience on a journey from darkness to light, leaving mystery and exhilaration in its wake. Joining the Orchestra to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is Sonoko Mirian Welde, who makes her BSO debut. Born in Bergen in 1996, Sonoko Miriam Welde is one of the most exciting young artists to emerge from Norway in recent years.

She made her debut with the Bergen Philharmonic age nine, and has since appeared with internationally renowned orchestras including Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

During the summer of 1880 Brahms composed two of his most famous works, reminiscent of the two faces of the thespian mask. The first was the Academic Festival Overture, a humorous piece and the other, the melancholic Tragic Overture. In a letter to a friend the German composer said that “one laughs and the other weeps”. His intention was not to tell a story, but to elicit emotion on the part of the audience. In this concert the BSO will be playing the Tragic Overture, and although it may not weep, it does have an emotional resonance that is exceptionally powerful.

Dvořák’s Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’ was written in 1893, whilst he was working in America and it is arguably his most popular symphony. The New World Symphony is filled with numerous well known and recognisable melodies. The Largo holds a special claim to fame as the underlying music for Britain’s favourite television advert, ‘Boy on the bike’ for Hovis bread, directed by Ridley Scott.

In June 2018, the BSO appointed the award-winning Polish conductor Marta Gardolińska as its BSO Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association. Marta has been establishing her name in classical music, in her own country and abroad, as an inspiring and versatile conductor. Marta studied at some of the most prestigious institutions in Europe and the USA, including the Frédéric Chopin Music University in Warsaw, the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians in Maine, USA.
