Visitors to Portland's Osprey leisure centre will be able to enjoy the community space and stay warm this winter, thanks to a cash boost from local Freemasons.

A donation of £500 from the Portland-based Freemason Naval and Military Mark Lodge 634 was awarded to the centre to help pay for new automatic doors.

The cheque was awarded to the leisure centre's general manager, John Jennison, by lodge charity steward, Tony Smallman along with the provincial charity steward Richard Paisley.

Speaking on behalf of Osprey leisure centre, Mr Jennison said: “The centre is used by all, regardless of their ability, and it is important that access to the building is made as easy as possible.

"The new doors will make a huge difference especially in the winter and we are very grateful to the Freemasons for supporting Osprey in this way.”

The match funding for the doors was raised through a donation from the One Family Foundation and sponsorship from a charity bike ride.

The charity South Dorset Community Sports Trust has been running Osprey Leisure Centre since 2007.

The sports trust receives no financial support from the local authorities and is entirely reliant on raising its own funds through user fees and grant applications.
